Egyptian songs

A few weeks ago I shared some Egyptian songs, and we explored some of the “classic” composers and singers that are dear to Egyptians.

We mentioned the likes of Umm Kulthum, Riad Al Sunbaty, and Mohamed Abdul Wahab, and Said Darwish.

There was something missing from that post.

Where was the Oud element to all that? How do you explore this music on Oud?

The task is fairly difficult.

For many years I avoided learning Egyptian songs and pieces because the recordings of the classics are very poor quality. It’s difficult to hear the Oud surrounded by an Orchestra of Violins and such. And the notation I would find didn’t seen to match what I was hearing. The nuance wasn’t there.

It took a few years to really develop the sense of nuance I was hearing and what was missing from that limited notation I found.

This is a huge issue for learners. How you hear an ensemble play a melody and how it’s supposed to sound on Oud are two different things.
